5. Washing your face at the wrong time: Always wash your face after you rinse out your hair products and conditioner in the shower, never before. Many conditioners contain pore-clogging isopropyl myristate and other hair products often contain coconut oil — both are common acne-causing ingredients that you don’t want to leave on your skin.

6. Not using sunscreen every day: Not just for your trip to the beach. Not just during the long summer days. Every day. Yes, it’s important to be even more vigilant if you plan to spend lots of time in direct sunlight. But incidental sun exposure typically accounts for more of our lifetime exposure to ultraviolet rays than those days at the beach. Walking to and from your car, dashing out of the office for a sandwich, or sitting outside for a few minutes adds up — make sure you’re covered with at least SPF 15, every day.

3. Spending too much on skin care: Splurging on the beautiful packaging and luxurious scents of pricey boutique skin care lines can feel wonderfully pampering — provided you know that it’s absolutely not necessary for great skin. In fact, many of my favorite products are made by drugstore brands, because those companies have the large budgets for top-notch research and development. If you have to choose, put your money toward that prescription retinoid, and buy the rest of your regimen at the drugstore. Another example is spending too much money on blinds and vertical blinds rather than other thing in house or spending all saving just in return of premium life insurance.

4. Getting facials: Yes, that’s right — you can strike facials from your skin-care budget and actually be doing your skin a favor! Studies show that as many as 80% of people break out after a facial. Aestheticians often don’t know which products are right for the skin of each client, and may use ingredients that can worsen acne, or essential oils that tend to irritate sensitive skin. Even if you don’t break out, there are really no long-term benefits to facials.

1. Using a cleanser with harsh detergents: Many people assume that the suds of their vigorously foaming cleanser are a good sign — surely they’ll leave skin extra clean. Unfortunately, copious suds are generally a sign that your cleanser contains a harsh detergent, like lauryl sulfate, that strips skin of vital lipids. (And don’t get me started on bar soap — that is always a no-no.) Instead, look for cleansers that contain fatty acids and will actually fortify your skin, like Dove’s ProAge products, or even simple cold cream. If you have particularly dry skin, I recommend cleansing oils, which remove dirt and makeup without disturbing your skin’s natural protective barrier. 

2. Not using a retinoid: Retinol, a form of vitamin A, is the only topical ingredient proven not only to prevent lines and wrinkles but to minimize the ones you already have. Past the age of 30, I recommend seeing a dermatologist for a higher-concentration prescription retinoid (like Retin-A, Differin, or Tazorac, for example), but there are also many great over-the-counter creams that contain lower concentrations of retinol. I like Roc Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Night Cream, Neutrogena Healthy Skin Night Cream, and SkinCeuticals Retinol 1.0.

Japan‘s No. 2 automaker declined to give a reason for the urgency of the news conference later Wednesday, except for “internal factors.” In recent years, the annual media event has usually been an occasion for Honda to announce ambitious plans for growth in key global regions and outline its strategy in green technology such as hybrids and fuel cell vehicles.

But speculation is rife this year’s news will be dismal as the industry gets hammered by the global recession set off by the U.S. financial crisis. Japan’s top business daily, The Nikkei, reported Wednesday that Honda will revise its profit forecast lower — its third revision this year — and will scale back some of its planned investments to rein in costs.

Honda officials declined to comment on the report. The company’s shares, which have fallen to about half their value since the beginning of this year, ended the morning session at 1,883 yen ($21) in Tokyo, down 90 yen. In a news conference earlier this month, Honda President Takeo Fukui warned the industry may have entered a critical period of transition because of the financial crisis. “It is difficult to foresee what lies ahead, and it is beyond our imagination,” he said on nationally televised news. 1. Evaluate Your Needs and Skills

First you need to select where you want to go. Next you need to determine the goals that will get you there. Use your computer or a pad of paper to write down your needs and skills. Your business needs should include everything you hope to attain, including employment, living situation, investments, education, retirement, spiritual pursuits, and any other particular needs. Your skills list should include your abilities and strong points that can help you attain your goals. The idea is to play toward your strong points while either avoiding or, in some cases, strengthening the areas where you are weak.

2. Create a Plan

Get an idea of what you want in terms of short-term, medium-term, and long-term goals. Make an effort to create a plan that satisfies your needs as well as utilizes your strengths in terms of business. Your goal attainment plan includes the basic steps you will need to take to achieve goal success. Your plan maps out the success route for each one of your goals. Without a business plan, it is much harder to maintain direction and set up your goals.

Overall, cell-phone service has become significantly better, judging by the annual survey conducted in September by the Consumer Reports National Research Center. Contract terms for cell-phone service are less onerous, and there were fewer problems with call quality in this year’s survey. The best carriers even came through after a hurricane hit one of our survey cities.

Sixty percent of readers were completely or very satisfied with their service. That appears to be a substantial improvement over 2007, even though we made some changes to our survey this year, including expanding the number of cities we rate and the coverage areas within them.

The improvement means cellular satisfaction is now closer to the average among all services we rate; it had previously been among the worst. What’s behind this surge in satisfaction? There were fewer problems with connectivity, the ability to widely receive service that’s free of static and dropped calls. Overall, 42 percent of readers reported that they had no major complaints about service, up from 29 percent in our previous survey. In particular, they were less likely to cite as a top complaint the automatic extension of their cell-phone contract as a result of changing their service.
